Zamfara Govt. Vows To Implement Policies Towards Protection Of Gender Based Violence

The Zamfara state government says it is determined to work with relevant stakeholders in the implementation of policies that are directed towards protecting women and girls from Gender Based Violence.


The programme was organized by Zamfara State Hisbah Commission in collaboration with Development Research and Project Centre and Federation of Muslim Women of Nigeria FOMWAN.


State Deputy Governor Sen. Hassan Muhammad Nasiha Jarman Gusau stated this at a One-Day step down workshop on the role of State Hisbah Commission in Protecting women and girls from Gender Based Violence, applying Islamic perspectives.


The Deputy Governor represented by Hon. Abubakar Mailafiya Mada said already the state has some existing laws that ensures right of women and children are protected against violence and intimidation.


Hassan Nasiha who urged participants to fully concentrate on what they would be taught also enjoined security agents, traditional rulers and civil society and  faith based organizations to play complementary role in addressing the spate of Gender Based and related violence.


In a speech, Secretary to the State Government Kabiru Balarabe represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Barira Ibrahim Bagobiri said religion has already protect women and children against violence.


Earlier Speaking Executive Director GRPC Dr. Abdullahi Maiwada said the idea to initiate the programme was to scale up the campaign against Gender Based Violence which continue to affect the social wellbeing of people, pointing out how it affects both male and female populations.


Dr. Maiwada said curtailing the menace of gender based violence is a collective responsibility and specified the stakeholders roles in changing the narratives.


He said women are most affected as one in every three women suffered violence directly or indirectly, hence the need for authorities to do the needful in addressing the ugly trend.


In a goodwill message, Emir of Gusau Sarkin Katsina Dr. Ibrahim Bello represented by Senior District Head Bashir Kabir Danbaba suggested application of other measures in punishing crimes instead of jailing a culprits, pointing out that even Prison Service has changed to correctional services.


While lamenting the way victims of rape offences were not being punished accordingly  Dr. Ibrahim Bello said the act increases in the spate of the offence in the society.


He assured the traditional rulers support to the activities of gender based violence prevention in the State and commended the organizers of the programme for a job weldone.
